Dr. Jette is an international expert in the development and dissemination of contemporary outcome measurement instruments to evaluate health care quality and outcomes. This lecture will describe the concept of system skills, a term first coined by neurosurgeon Atul Gawandi.  Systems skills focus on skill development in 3 critical areas: an intrinsic interest in data, the ability to devise solutions to problems identified by the data; and understanding of how to implement practice innovations on a large scale.  These skills are relevant to contemporary clinical practice across all disciplines.  The first part of the lecture addresses the importance of measurement and the resultant ‘systems data’ that are critical to contemporary practice in a changing healthcare environment.  The middle section of the lecture introduces the concept of ‘positive deviance’ and provides case examples of innovators who are using systems data to solve clinical challenges.  The final section of the lecture discusses the principles of diffusion of innovation and provides examples of how practice innovations can be widely disseminated throughout the health care field.
