CECE Event 鈥撀燘roken Places Film Screening: Examining the Impact of Childhood Adversity
Free and open to the public
BROKEN PLACES explores why some children are severely damaged by early adversity while others are able to thrive. The film revisits abused and neglected children profiled decades ago, to dramatically illustrate how early trauma shaped their lives as adults. BROKEN PLACES interweaves these longitudinal narratives with commentary from a few nationally renowned experts to help viewers better understand the devastating impact of childhood adversity as well as the inspiring characteristics of resilience. The documentary screening will be followed by an interprofessional panel discussion. This event is a partnership between UNE鈥檚 Interprofessional Education Collaborative and the Maine Resilience Building Network.

Panelists:
Marleah Wentworth, MEd is a Substance Use Prevention Coordinator for Partners for Healthier Communities at Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford. She has a Master鈥檚 Degree in Education from the 51品茶 and a BA in Communications from the University of Southern Maine. Before working in prevention, she was a public school teacher in New Hampshire teaching English in an alternative program.
Bruce Chemelski, PhD holds doctorates in clinical and developmental psychology. He was the founder and senior partner of Eastern Maine Counseling and Testing Services in Bangor Maine and the clinical director of Spring Harbor Academy and Senior Psychologist at Spring Harbor Hospital for over 10 years. He鈥檚 currently in private practice consulting with a variety of school systems and agencies across mid-coast and Southern Maine.
Ayla Zeimer, LCPC is a therapist in private practice in Portland. She earned her Master鈥檚 Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Southern Maine in 2015, and has since worked in community mental health clinics, non-profits, and private practice. She has extensive training in trauma-informed approaches, including Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing, and Polyvagal Theory.
Mary Bristol, LCSW is the Assistant Director of Bereavement Services at the Center for Grieving Children. She provides oversight for bereavement staff and volunteers and coordinates internship experiences for bachelor and master鈥檚 level students. Mary previously assisted children and families with adoptive and foster care related issues, provided outpatient counseling and managed a residential center for adolescent girls. Mary graduated from the Smith College School for Social Work.
Ashley Nadeau Belanger, BS is a Resiliency Resource and Truancy Coordinator at JFK Kindergarten Center in Biddeford. Her focus is to improve overall school climate, make connections with every student, and implement systems to reduce trauma and promote resilience. Ashley graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in mental health and human services from the University of Maine at Augusta and is working towards her master鈥檚 degree in clinical social work at the University of Maine Orono.
