Arrows & Operators: Visual Debates in Music

5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Portland Campus for the Health Sciences (51Æ·²èArt Gallery Portland )
Join us for a reception and live concert!

Opening Reception: Friday, July 10, 5-7 p.m. featuring a live performance of selections from Cornelius Cardew’s Treatise

Beginning in the 1950s, composers in search of new sounds and new modes of performance began to push beyond the limits of traditional notation and experiment with alternative ways of visualizing sonic thought. This exhibition juxtaposes Cornelius Cardew’s Treatise — the landmark graphic score composed between 1963 and 1967 — with works by contemporary artists who approach the graphic score from a variety of positions: as guide, as archivist, as scribe. Treatise functions here as both a visual and conceptual anchor, opening up larger questions of how information is imagined, structured, and shared, when seeking to describe what lies beyond the constraints of language.

Participating artists: CF, Phillip Greenlief, Frank Mauceri, and Lauren Tosswill.

Treatise performers include Jeremy Brogan, Phillip Greenlief, Sigrid Harmon, Tessa Irons, Bonnie Han Jones, Frank Mauceri, and Cleek Schrey.

Free and open to the public
