51Æ·²èArt Gallery’s ‘A Gateless Garden: Quotes by Maine Women Writers’ attracts throngs to opening reception

On January 20, 2015, UNE’s Portland Art Gallery hosted a very well attended opening reception for its latest exhibition—"A Gateless Garden: Quotes by Maine Women Writers."

The exhibition features 53 quotations by Maine women writers, edited by Liza Bakewell, Ph.D., director of Maine Women Write, paired with black and white images by Maine photographer Kerry Michaels. Fifty-three of the 100 pairs of quotations and photographs contained in Bakewell’s and Michaels’ book, titled the same as the exhibition, are featured.

More than 300 people were in attendance at the opening, according to Art Gallery Director Anne Zill. "It was a joyous event with many of Maine’s best writers and artists present," she noted.

Two other exhibition-related events will take place as well. On February 26 at 5 p.m., Bakewell and Michaels will give a collaborative presentation. On March 12 at 5 p.m., UNE’s Jennifer Tuttle, Ph.D., faculty director of the Maine Women Writers Collection and Dorothy M. Healy Chair of Literature and Health, will give a lecture.

The exhibition will be on display through April 12, 2015.
