51品茶dental students organize 5K race to benefit Caring Hands of Maine
On June 5, 2016, members of UNE鈥檚 Dental Medicine Student Association held their second annual Miles for Smiles 5K at Portland鈥檚 Back Cove Trail. All proceeds from the event benefited Caring Hands of Maine, an organization dedicated to providing accessible, high quality healthcare services to rural communities in Maine.
The event, attended by approximately 100 participants, raised over $2,500 for the beneficiary. In addition to participating in the race, several members of the Dental Medicine Students Association have been involved in outreach activities with Caring Hands of Maine. While volunteering in its mobile dentistry clinic in underserved Maine communities, they have provided education, preventative care and treatment to promote healthy behaviors.
Speaking about the event, Katie Jo Hunt (CDM, 鈥17) said, 鈥淭his year鈥檚 Miles for Smiles 5K was a huge success. Not only were we able to raise funds for Caring Hands of Maine, but we also spread awareness of the dental needs of our state.鈥
She continued, 鈥淭his was made possible in large by the great participation of our community members. My hope is that we can continue to educate the public about the importance of oral health and ways to contribute to improving the dental health of our state.鈥
