Brian Duff, Ph.D., associate professor and chair in the Department of Political Science, was interviewed on MPBN鈥檚 "Morning Edition" radio program on October 7, 2016, about the presidential campaigns in Maine this year.

There has been speculation lately about Maine鈥檚 electoral votes being split for the first time, with the 2nd District supporting Donald Trump and the 1st District voting for Hillary Clinton. Duff discussed this possibility and also commented on how the political attitudes and voting patterns of people in the 2nd District have been changing.

He said that the divide between the two districts is not solely a matter of economics, as some may think. People in Maine鈥檚 more rural and northern district, he suggested, gravitate toward Trump because he gives a voice to their feeling that the values that enabled their success in life are no longer conducive to success for their children. 鈥淭he 2nd District of Maine is reflecting national trends,鈥 Duff explained. 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 have to do with the literal experience of struggling economically. It does have to do with this feeling that there are forces that we can鈥檛 quite control or understand that are changing our economy and our culture.鈥
