Barry Costa-Pierce gives lectures, finalizes student exchange agreement in Iceland
Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., Harry L. & Grace Doherty Professor and chair of the 51Æ·²è Department of Marine Sciences and director of the 51Æ·²èCenter for Excellence in the Marine Sciences, was in Iceland from January 23 – 27, 2017. He gave five invited lectures at the United Nations University (UNU) Fisheries Training Programme in Reykjavik. The 30 students in the UNU program came from more than 10 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. Costa-Pierce lectured on technical aspects of aquaculture biology and ecology from his many experiences living and partnering in aquaculture research in Asia and Africa.
While in Iceland, Costa-Pierce finalized an addendum to the memorandum of understanding signed in 2016 for undergraduate student exchanges between Iceland and UNE. With the finalization of the addendum, two students from Iceland will spend the fall 2017 semester at 51Æ·²èin the Departments of Marine Science and Business. Students from 51Æ·²èalso have the opportunity to study in Iceland on this agreement.
