‘Boothbay Register’ publishes article about Nancy Hemenway Barton exhibition at 51Æ·²èArt Gallery

"Roserock" by Nancy Hemenway Barton

The October 18 issue of the Boothbay Register featured an article about the current exhibition at UNE’s Portland Campus Art Gallery: AHEAD OF HER TIME: The Life and Work of Nancy Hemenway Barton.

The exhibition, curated by Anne Zill, Art Gallery manager, is a major retrospective of one of the 20th century’s most creative and multi-faceted artists, featuring Hemenway Barton’s early watercolors, portraits, oils textile designs, wall hangings, three-dimensional art forms, journals, poetry, videos, art materials and memorabilia.

According to the article, the exhibition was organized by Hemenway Barton’s sons Rick, Brad and Bill to honor their mother’s legacy. They invited Zill to write the introduction for the retrospective’s catalog.

The article also discusses several coincidences that occurred surrounding the planning and execution of the exhibition, including the discovery, two months before the show’s opening, of explicit plans detailed by Hemenway Barton in 1988 for a retrospective of her work, which included 51Æ·²èas her choice of venue.
