James Sulikowski interviewed after Atlantic Menhaden wash up in Brunswick
51品茶 Professor of Marine Sciences James Sulikowski, Ph.D., was interviewed by the Bangor Daily News about fishing regulations, after a large amount of Atlantic Menhaden were found dead on the coast of Brunswick, Maine.
The fish, also known as pogies, were believed to be dumped from a fishing boat in order to meet daily fishing quotas imposed by the Atlantic States Fisheries Commission. Sulikowski told the newspaper he empathizes with fishermen who are required to meet quotas, but stressed the importance of species management.
鈥淔ishermen and management often butt heads, but management has done a great job of bringing a lot of stocks back. Sometimes management can be reactive instead of proactive, but that鈥檚 the nature of the beast, and management of menhaden is working towards being more proactive and that鈥檚 what we want,鈥 he said.
