51品茶College of Dental Medicine partners with NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine to offer postgraduate residency program
The 51品茶 College of Dental Medicine (51品茶CDM) has partnered with NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine, now part of NYU Langone Medical Center, to provide a CODA-accredited Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program. This postgraduate residency program began July 3, 2017, at 51品茶CDM.
The College of Dental Medicine鈥檚 AEGD residents will provide patient-centered treatments, including oral surgery and complex prosthodontics, in a collaborative and educational group practice setting.
This program expands the role of the 51品茶CDM, the first dental college in Northern New England, and creates new, affordable care options for underserved populations. Area dentists will have the opportunity to refer patients with complex oral health care needs to UNE鈥檚 Oral Health Center, giving these patients a new pathway to care.
鈥淭he goal of this new partnership is to provide training to recent graduates in evidence-based clinical dentistry at a postdoctoral level,鈥 said Elias Mikael Chatah, D.M.D., assistant clinical professor and AEGD site director in the College of Dental Medicine. 鈥淩esidents will learn how to refine clinical skills necessary to provide comprehensive oral health care, including advanced treatment planning for a wider patient population.鈥
In addition to clinical practice at a postgraduate level, the AEGD program will provide graduate level didactic instruction via video conferencing, traditional lectures, literature reviews and case-based education. Students will also gain public health education, a hallmark of the doctoral program, and will be trained on 鈥淪creening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment鈥 (SBIRT), a program of The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Furthermore, they will be taught alternative pain management strategies in an effort to reduce the opioid crisis. Completion of the training serves as a path to dental licensure in several states.
鈥淲e are pleased to add a new postgraduate program to our already robust D.M.D. program,鈥 said Chatah. 鈥淭he College of Dental Medicine is proud to serve the people of Maine and Northern New England.鈥
