An article on 鈥淭ourism and the Modern World鈥 by Eric Zuelow, Ph.D., associate professor of European history in the Department of History and Philosophy, was published on March 28 by the World Financial Review. The piece traces both the development of tourism as a product of modernization as well as the development of tourism鈥檚 role in shaping modernity.
In the article, Zuelow argues that tourism and modernity have been linked since the 18th century. He explains that tourism, played a key role in creating and reinforcing the thought patterns of humans who view themselves as different from those who came before. Tourism, he says, 鈥渁cted (and acts) as a teacher: educating us about politics, history, science, environment, technology, and much more besides. 鈥淚t helps to define who we think we are, who we think others are, and the relationships that exist between us.鈥
