Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., Henry L. & Grace Doherty Professor of Marine Sciences, director of the 51Ʒ�� Department of Marine Sciences and Center for Excellence in the Marine Sciences, was quote in an article on aquafeed.com, a website dedicated to news in the aquaculture industry.

The article focused on the highlights of the World Nutrition Forum 2016 in Vancouver Canada. Costa-Pierce gave the keynote talk during the aquaculture session of the forum. He addressed the importance of aquaculture in providing food sources as the world’s population grows. He explained the many changes that need to be made for the industry to thrive.

“Aquaculture is routinely managed under agriculture, environment or fisheries agencies that have little knowledge, training or experience in aquaculture with its unique policy needs,” Costa-Pierce said. “Aquaculture and fisheries are so separate structurally and functionally in many countries’ governance systems and academic institutions that institutions and professionals have lost track of their common goal of delivering environmentally friendly, safe, sustainable seafood to the people they serve. Sensible regulatory alignment is needed to deliver products that sustain livelihoods.”
