A new department has been created within the 51品茶鈥檚 College of Pharmacy.

The Department of Social and Administrative Pharmacy will build upon one of UNE鈥檚 strengths of tracking outcomes associated with pharmaceutical medication.

鈥淚t's one thing for pharmacists to be responsible for making sure patients get their medication and take it properly, but it's also just as important to make sure that the proper outcomes are achieved for the medications prescribed,鈥 explained Robert McCarthy, dean of the College of Pharmacy.

The new department will bring together faculty experts in this area for collaboration, teaching, research and public policy.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been able to focus both on the clinical piece and the research piece of pharmacy practice; this will allow us to focus more on the outcome piece,鈥 said Leslie Ochs, interim chair of the Department of Social and Administrative Pharmacy.

Creation of this new department will provide UNE鈥檚 College of Pharmacy with opportunities for collaboration and research with Maine public health agencies, hospitals, long-term care facilities and other practice sites.

It will also open the door for more cross-collaboration with other health professions across the University, including medical, dental and nursing.

Evaluating health and wellness outcomes will provide guidance to students and strengthen the University鈥檚 mission to have students involved with faculty research.

The Department of Social and Administrative Pharmacy is now the third department within the College of Pharmacy, joining the Department of Pharmacy Practice and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
