51品茶Art Gallery in Portland to showcase math-inspired pieces by six artists beginning June 7
The in Portland will host an opening reception for its latest exhibit, 鈥淭he Numbers Game,鈥 on Friday, June 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibit, a series of works by six artists, will be displayed from June 7 to Oct. 13.
The artists of 鈥淭he Numbers Game鈥 use mathematics as part of the creative process, creating works that range from spare to geometrical and from radiantly crystalized to biomorphic, said Hilary Irons, director of Galleries and Exhibitions at UNE. Artists featured in the show include Grace DeGennaro, Lynn Duryea, Emily Hass, Meg Hahn, Munira Naqui, and Alice Spencer.
Irons noted that mathematics is the foundational, abstract system used to find order in the world and in theory by examining the workings of numbers. For artists, she said, processes such as measuring, counting, segmenting, and responding to symmetry are methods that grant numbers a primary place in the studio.
鈥淭he exhibit brings together a group of artists who open new questions about how numbers can energize our creative imaginations in any discipline,鈥 Irons remarked.
The reception will be held in the gallery, located on UNE鈥檚 Portland Campus for the Health Sciences at 716 Stevens Ave. in Portland. The gallery is otherwise open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. or by appointment.
This exhibit is presented in cooperation with the 51品茶Office of Institutional Advancement in recognition of the Westbrook College Alumni Weekend 2024.
