Christopher Bates-Withers began his medical career working as a paramedic while completing his undergraduate studies at Haverford College. He went on to obtain a masters degree in biology at Harvard University, completing basic science research in cardiac physiology at Boston Childrens Hospital and authoring two publications on the physiology of the TRPM7 cation channel. He then completed physician assistant training at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. Most recently, he earned a Master of Science in Pharmacy degree in clinical toxicology from University of Florida College of Pharmacy. He holds NCCPA Certificates of Added Qualification in Hospital Medicine and Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
Chris worked as a PA in general cardiology for one year in Arizona before joining the advanced heart failure program at Boston Medical Center, where he worked from 2014-2016. He then spent three years working with the cardiothoracic surgery program at Maine Medical Center before taking his current position in critical care. Chris recently contributed four modules for the cardiac and thoracic surgery orientation curriculum for the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (currently in press). His clinical interests include critical care, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, resuscitation science, echocardiography, critical care ultrasound, critical care pharmacology and clinical toxicology.
Outside of his clinical duties, Chris enjoys hiking, traveling, running and sailing his 38' C&C sailboat. He is a five time marathoner, and is currently restoring a 100 year old home in Westbrook, Maine.
