Ishbel Curry ’22
My name is Ishbel (Gaelic for Isabel), or, as I am more commonly known, Bella. I am half West Indian from Trinidad and half Scottish. My parents met in Jamaica at Medical School at the University of West Indies where my mother was doing a residency program and my father was studying. After completion of their studies, my parents moved back to Scotland. I was born in Scotland in a small suburban town between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Disliking the constant rain, we then immigrated to the east coast of the United States. I grew up in New England, receiving my B.A. in Biology from Boston University and my M.A. in Biology from the University of Saint Joseph. I initially went into biomedical research, but realized I wanted to have more of a direct impact on clinical care and so I applied to the 51Æ·²è's Osteopathic program. I instantly fell in love with the school when I came for the interview and it became my top choice.
To those interested in pursuing a career in medicine, please remember that the journey to becoming a physician can be an arduous path, but dedication and perseverance will get you far. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for those few who have loved and supported me each step of the way. I can only hope that overcoming my personal adversities will make me a more compassionate physician and one day make my son proud. I am elated to be here, surrounded by such brilliance, and am honored and blessed to be studying here amongst my classmates.
